Sex cards to educate masses ( 2003-09-17 09:46) (bjtoday.com)
The Family Planning Office of Haidian District has begun distributing playing
cards printed with all sorts of useful sex and family planning knowledge. It¡¯s
part of a drive to promote and popularize the new Beijing Family Planning
Ordinance.
The first 6,000 sets of playing cards have been distributed among local
citizens for free. They seem pretty popular so far. ¡°Chinese people are
traitionally shy and reluctant to talk about sex. Our offices are still filled
with propaganda materials from years ago, but the playing cards have proved
welcome with local citizens.
We've given them all away alredy, including the samples on my own table,¡±
said Zhang Li, director of the Family Planning Office who came up with the
idea.¡°There is even a consultative phone number on one of the cards,¡± said a
woman who had just pied up a set. She described the cards as "practical" and
"worth keeping." The cards have quickly drawn public attention as well as
differing opinions.
Some people believe that it's a new and funny form of openly popularizing
sexual knowledge that people usually feel too shy to talk about, and can
challenge the old conservative Chinese traditions. Opponents say sex is a
private matter and information about it should be spread by more carefully
selected means than popular forms of entertainment like playing cards.
