( 2003-09-16 13:50) (China Daily)

A Gansu farmer who spent three years and 80,000 yuan (US$9,600) building his own airplane has failed to get the home-made machine off the ground, reports Xinhua.

Zhang Yuxiang, a farmer in Baiyin, Gansu Province, runs a motorcycle repair shop. After starting his project in 2001, he finally finished the aircraft on September 1.

The plane is six metres long, nine metres wide and weighs 480 kilograms. But he has yet to get the plane airborne in several attempted flights at a local airport.
