'Traffic policeman' fines drivers ( 2003-09-15 17:20) (China Daily)
An unemployed man who wore a stolen traffic police officer's uniform and
issued on-the-spot fines to drivers to make money has been sentenced to two
years in jail, reports Xinhua.
Li Zengrong, a jobless 22-year-old, stole a walkie-talkie, a police uniform,
two ticketing booklets and a police motorcycle in Jiaozhou, Shandong Province
earlier this year. He proudly rode the motorcycle while dressed in the traffic
officer's apparel, with his girlfriend in tow.
But after awhile he tired of simply parading around. So he started pulling
over vehicles at busy roadsides at night and fining them for speeding or
carrying too much freight. But fewer traffic police are on duty after dark.
Li was eventually arrested on a March night when a real traffic policeman on
patrol noticed him issuing tickets to a truck driver - Li was wearing only the
coat over civilian clothes.
