A growing number of people from Hong Kong are choosing to work in China's
financial and economic center of Shanghai.
The latest figures from Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Labor and Social
Security show that 3,432 people from Hong Kong applied for work permits to date,
including 643 in the first six months of this year.
Last year, 964 Hong Kong residents applied for work permits, up from 562 in
2001. The figures show 87 percent of the Hong Kong workers have academic
diplomas at or above bachelor degree-level and most work in overseas-financed
businesses, including social services, manufacturing, real estate, banking and
insurance.
Mr. Zheng, from Hong Kong, who has been working as a department chief with
the Shanghai office of an international pharmaceutical company, said: "No other
city fascinates me like Shanghai where the work is full of challenges and
opportunities with the presence of so many
multinationals."
