disposable income per capita reached 6,261 yuan. The pursuit of fashionable
individuality and brand-name clothing is everywhere in evidence. The consumption
of durable goods is concentrated in high-grade, decorative and new items.
Air-conditioners and motorcycles are very popular nowadays, and some residents
even have computers and cars. The ratio of consumption expenditure to the total
family expenditure in the areas of house purchase, communications, entertainment
and culture has gone up tremendously in the past few years. With the per capita
housing space in the urban districts reaching 8.1 sq. m., Jinan is one of the
leading provincial capitals in the nation in this respect. The residential
districts have elegant and novel layouts, complete facilities and comprehensive
community services. Among these districts, Foshan and Yanzishan have been cited
as Model Residential Districts in China. Jinan enforces a minimum wage
standard and a system of old-age insurance in rural areas. In April 1997, the
Jinan Charity Society was established. With 131 members, it has collected money
and materials worth over two million yuan.
