Chinese toys capture 90 per cent of Karachi market
( 2003-09-14 15:14) (Xinhua)

Chinese toys have virtually captured over 90 per cent of the market in Karachi, Pakistan's commercial and financial center, English newspaper Dawn reported Sunday.

Pakistani toys used to enjoy 75 per cent of the market in early 1990s with three leading players in the organized sector and a number of players in the informal sector.

The market share of local products plummeted to 40 per cent in 1998 and with the passage of time, Chinese products managed to get their toehold in the market by currently capturing over 90 per cent.

A random survey in the markets reveals that majority of the toy shops are now flooded with Chinese products and there is virtually an oversupply of Chinese goods.

Cheap price factor and the variety of designs of Chinese toys have caught the attention of buyers, a retailer was quoted as saying.
