Long-distance 'lover' eyes cash ( 2003-09-11 12:47) (China Daily)
A man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison and fined 65,000 yuan (US$7,830) by the Fengxian People's Court for swindling money from a woman looking for love, reports Shanghai Evening Post. Huang, a wealthy woman in Chongqing, published an ad seeking a husband in Shanghai. After reading the ad, Yang called Huang and introduced himself as Chen Weidong, a Harvard graduate returning to Shanghai to conduct some real estate business. After several phone conversations, Huang was convinced by Yang's story and decided he was her Mr Right. On 18 different occasions, Yang asked Huang to wire money to his account on the excuse that his own money was tied up in various business ventures. He eventually accumulated 329,600 yuan (US$39,640). But Huang did not report him to police until someone warned her that her
dream man might actually be a swindler.
