More than 10 people were injured on an escalator at Xinzhuang Station on the city's No 1 Metro Line, reports Shanghai Morning Post.

At about 7:45 am on Monday, the up escalator suddenly changed direction and began heading down, causing everyone standing on it to fall.

All of the injured were sent to nearby Minhang Central Hospital for treatment.

Xue, who is five months pregnant, was standing on the last step of the escalator when the accident occurred. She did her best to shield her belly and protect her unborn child in spite of people falling on her and even treading over her.

A check-up determined that the foetus had not been harmed in the incident.

The escalator had just passed its annual inspection.
