'Public figures should tolerate criticism' ( 2003-09-09 12:29) (China Daily) Celebrated writer Yu Qiuyu
lost a libel case on Saturday when the court ruled that prominent figures ought
to tolerate public criticism to some extent, reports Beijing Evening News.
Yu, a well-known culture and history writer, sued Xiao Xialin for defamation
for writing that Yu had received a villa from the Shenzhen government as a gift.
But the Dongcheng District People's Court said the gift story had circulated
throughout cultural circles and had not been started by Xiao.
As a public figure, Yu should show some tolerance to a certain amount of
criticism in the media as long as it was not malicious or in direct violation of
the law, the court said.
