5 killed, 2 missing in rainstorm-related disasters in China ( 2003-09-08 11:40) (Xinhua) Rainstorm-triggered disasters,
including mountain torrents and landslides, killed five people in the eastern
part of Sichuan Province, southwest China, on Saturdayand Sunday, leaving two
missing, local disaster relief officials said on Sunday.
Dazhou City in the province was the hardest hit by the disaster,where three
women in a mountainous part of Wanyuan City were confirmed dead after they were
swept away by mountain torrents on Saturday when crossing a river.
Ren Tao, vice-director of the Disaster Reduction Office of the Bazhong City
government, said about 890,000 people were affected by the storm in the rural
areas of the city during the past two days, where rainfall exceeded 100
millimeters in 13 hours and reached up to 179 millimeters in Tongjiang and
Nanjiang counties and Bazhou District.
Two people were killed and two were missing, the official said,giving no
details about the casualties.
Ren said 2,587 houses collapsed in 182 townships and the major highway
linking Bazhou District and its neighboring counties at one point were cut off
by landslides.
