Driver challenges passengers over seats ( 2003-09-05 14:41) (China Daily)
A bus driver in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province refused to drive on Tuesday when his
request for someone to give up their seat to an elderly man on board got no
response, reports Xinhua.
When no one answered his call, the bus driver turned off the engine and said,
"If nobody is willing to give up their seat, I'm not willing to drive today."
His tactic worked immediately. Someone instantly stood up and offered his seat
to the elderly man. Several other passengers, many of whom appeared to be
students, also vacated their seats for other elderly people standing near them.
When it was reported in the media the next day, citizens applauded the bus
driver for his insistence and criticized the passengers who initially refused to
offer up their seats.
