A bank robber was caught by police in Wuhan, Hubei Province, on Tuesday after a passer-by started hitting him with a bamboo stick used to carry vegetable baskets, reports Chutian Metro News.

After sneaking into the credit co-operative outlet of the Xinzhou District overnight and lying in wait until 7:30 am, the man stuck a pistol into the back of one of two bank clerks who were preparing a cash pick-up to be retrieved that morning.

Grabbing three bundles of banknotes from the cash drawer, the robber tried to get out the back way, but the iron door slammed shut in his face, knocking his pistol and the cash out of his hands.

When he turned and ran out of the front door, an elderly man took a bamboo stick from a vegetable peddler in the street and gave the robber several good whacks on the head. The young man was caught by police and other residents.
