Students at a school in Handan, Hebei Province, have been charged different
tuition fees according to their performances on last semester's final exam,
reports Yanzhao Evening News.
Li Ming, in his second year of junior middle school, told the newspaper he
had to pay tuition of 441 yuan (US$53) as he ranked lower than 400th last
semester.
But the best students paid just 141 yuan (US$17), while the worst were
charged more than 700 (US$85), he said. The school categorized the students in
different groups according to their ranking on the exam. Each successive group
consisted of 100 students, and the tuition increased by 100 yuan (US$12) per
group.
