Decoration workers loot attic space
( 2003-09-03 15:54) (China Daily)

Several decoration workers uncovered a "gold mine" while they were refurbishing a wooden floor for a client, reports Shanghai Morning Post.

The workers found a crawl space under the floor in which several leather jackets and an iron box had been stashed. The box held several pieces of jewellery, which the workers shared out amongst themselves.

Meanwhile, the people living downstairs were disturbed by noises overhead, but they could not open their "attic" - the space looted by the decoration workers - to see what was happening.

When they went upstairs, they saw that their attic had been broken into and the jewellery was missing. But when asked, the workers insisted said they hadn't seen or taken anything.

The downstairs neighbours reported the incident to police who discovered the jewellery hidden in sand bags at the site.

The decoration workers were recently arrested with the approval of the Yangpu People's Procuratorate.
