City vows to ban smuggling ( 2003-09-03 15:54) (China Daily)
Mayor Han Zheng has declared Shanghai a smuggling-free zone, Youth Daily
reports.
From 1998 through the first half of this year, Shanghai Customs and the
public security authority have cracked 2,572 smuggling cases involving a total
of 3.7 billion yuan (US$447 million).
The city is about to launch an anti-smuggling campaign, which will last until
January.
Officials in charge of departments and administrative organs that turn a
blind eye to smuggling cases or knowingly allow them to occur will be punished
along with the smugglers.
