Court orders name change
( 2003-09-03 15:47) (China Daily)

A divorced woman has been ordered by the court to change her six-year-old son's name as demanded by the boy's grandfather, reports Beijing Times.

When Li Xiaole's parents split up in 1998, he was only a year old. The court granted custody to his mother.

After Xiaole's mother later remarried, the rest of the Li family rarely saw the boy.

This April when his grandfather went to visit his grandson, he was surprised to learn that the boy was now called Ni, his stepfather's surname.

The Lis filed a lawsuit with the Pinggu County People's Court against the boy's mother, demanding that she change the boy's family name back to Li.

The court made its ruling in accordance with the Supreme Court's policy for dealing with family name conflicts.
