Hot weather, little rain delay flowers ( 2003-09-02 10:50) (China Daily)
Osmanthus flowers are not likely to bloom in time for the mid-autumn
festival, which falls on September 11 this year, reports Youth Daily.
The earliest blossoms among the thousands of osmanthus trees in Guilin Garden
will probably not appear until around September 22 according to Gu Shunxian, a
gardening expert.
Gu said temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius and higher over the past 30 days
or more and the lack of adequate rainfall this summer have hindered the buds'
normal growth pattern.
The osmanthus requires steady temperatures of between 15-28 degrees Celsius
to bloom.
Although the heat is dissipating, the blossoms will be postponed, Gu said,
adding that the National Day holiday at the beginning of October will be the
best time to enjoy the flowers.
