Hongkou to revive Jewish quarter ( 2003-09-01 10:54) (China Daily)
The Hongkou District in northeast Shanghai, home to some 20,000 Jewish
refugees during World War II, is planning to renovate several 1930s-style
buildings, reports Oriental Morning Post.
Previously, the district once known as "Little Vienna" was filled with
European gardens, cafes and churches.
District authorities are currently working on a plan to bring "Vienna" back,
with a blueprint to be completed in September.
Some elderly residents in the area can still speak Hebrew.
The refurbished community will attract even more tourists , according to the
newspaper.
