Son sued for faking mother's death ( 2003-09-01 10:48) (China Daily)
A 98-year-old woman in the Fangshan District has filed a lawsuit against her
son for reporting her as dead seven years ago, reports Beijing Morning Post.
Li, the mother of three sons and a daughter, moved to a village in Shidu
Town, Fangshan, to live with her daughter in 1996.
When she fell ill earlier this month and needed to get documentation of
residency from her third son's village, where she used to live, for
hospitalization purposes, the village committee expressed its surprise: "Didn't
you die in 1996?"
It turned out that her daughter-in-law, the third son's wife, had reported
her "death" to the village committee. According to the residency records of both
the committee and the local police station, the elderly woman hadn't existed for
seven years.
The angry woman asked her grandson to sue her son and daughter-in-law on her
behalf, demanding compensation of 20,000 yuan (US$2,400).
