Chinese gymnasts shine at Universiade ( 2003-08-31 10:32) (Xinhua)
Chinese gymnasts again proved their mastery in gymnastics competitions, after their national team's success in the World Championships last week, clinching four out of 10 apparatus golds here at the 22nd World University Games on Saturday. With their women's team gold medal on Thursday and Friday's silver in women's individual all-around competition, the Chinese team ended up 5 golds, 2 silvers and 1 bronze. Li Zhipeng opened the winning streak for China, overcoming his shoulder injury to take gold in the first exercise of men's floor. He scored 9.600 to beat Kazakh Stepan Gorbachev in 9.525. In the following four exercises of women's vault and uneven bars, men's pommel horse and rings, China only missed one gold on women's vault since no Chinese gymnast qualified for the final. Lin Bin shared the pommel horse's title with Aliaksei Ihnatovich of Belarus and Dong Zhen was joint champion with South Korean Yang Tae-young on rings. Wan Chen added a fourth gold on uneven bars. Her teammate Chen Miaojie took silver with 0.1 points less. Chen also picked up the bronze in balance beam, in which Iryna Yarotska of Ukraine clinched the gold. Yarotska, who topped Friday's women's all-around final, also wrap up women's floor title. Ukraine collected 3 golds, with the third on horizontal bar, won by Andriy Mykhaylychenko. South Korea, the home side, accumulated two joint golds from Yang. Yang also shared the parallel bars gold with Yernar Yerimbeton of Kazakhstan. Yernar Yerimbeton contributed the second gold for Kazakhstan, shared with Jevgenijs Sopronenko of Latvia. DPR Korea gained a gold on women's vault from Kim Yong-sil.
