'Peking University students' arrested
( 2003-08-28 15:18) (China Daily)

Two of the "Peking University student" swindlers who made away with money from a number of college students in recent weeks were arrested by police last Saturday, reports Jiangnan Metro News.

Police received a number of reports about some young people pretending to be Peking University students doing research in Nanchang. The swindlers all used similar sob stories to get sympathetic students to "loan" them money.

Police traced a young man and woman dressed like college students on Saturday morning.

Claiming to be law students at Peking University, the two said they had become separated from their professor with whom they were to do research on the economies of South and North China.

As the two launched into their scam again, police were on hand to arrest them.

They confessed that they belonged to a larger gang from Shenzhen.

A young woman attending Nanchang University lost 1,400 yuan (US$170) to a similar swindling case last week, according to an earlier report.
