Fire department keeps cattle cool ( 2003-08-28 14:53) (China Daily)
Firefighters quenched thirsts, rather than a fire, to save the livestock of a
cattle farm manager last month, reports Beijing Youth Daily. The grateful
manager was able to sell the animals on Tuesday.
At about 8 am on July 16, Xu Jinchuan, manager of the Ya'aolan Feeding Centre
located in a village in the Pinggu District, discovered his facility was without
water.
All 150 of the centre's cows could have succumbed to heatstroke in a mere one
to two hours in the excessively hot temperatures recorded that day. And their
300 calves would also have perished soon after, Xu said.
After learning that the village's power and water supply had been suspended
for repairs, Xu called on the local fire department, which sent water tanks to
the rescue.
