Roller skating will become a compulsory physical education course in some primary and middle schools in Shijingshan District from September, reports Beijing Times.

Previously, students in China were only required to pass sports course tests in running, jumping and throwing the shot-put.

Since 1998, the municipal education authority has been introducing pilot programmes in PE classes. A number of interesting sports, including roller skating, football and rock climbing, have been introduced as optional courses.

Shijingshan District will add roller skating to its compulsory course list when the new semester starts next month.
