Beckham thrilled by goal-scoring home debut
( 2003-08-28 10:35) (Agencis)

David Beckham scored on his first appearance for Real Madrid at the Bernabeu stadium on Wednesday to cap what he called a perfect home debut.

"It won't get any better than that for a debut, I don't think," Beckham told reporters after scoring Real's third goal in a 3-0 win over Real Mallorca that earned them a 4-2 aggregate victory in the Spanish Super Cup.

"I said that playing here tonight was going to be a special occasion for me and a special feeling."

Beckham was under pressure after two mediocre performances in his first two games for Real in Spain after his 35 million euro ($38 million) move from Manchester United, but he answered his critics with an excellent performance on Wednesday.

"There are always going to be pressure games but I can handle that," Beckham said. "I think I'm going to be a better player for it.

"I like to correct people and make people wrong. That's what my life and career have all been about. I'll hopefully carry on doing that.

"I enjoyed the game but the whole team played well. It helped scoring the first goal. Obviously it was good playing with these players and it's great playing in this team."

Beckham scored his first official goal after 73 minutes, meeting a pinpoint cross from Ronaldo and beating Mallorca keeper Leo Franco to head into an empty net.

Real coach Carlos Queiroz said that scoring the goal would help Beckham settle into the side.

"People have to understand that it's not easy to adjust to a new country, a new team and a new style of football.

"But little by little he is gaining more confidence, he's a good player and I know that he can play even better than he did tonight," Queiroz said.

The England man was all the more pleased to score with what was a rare headed goal.

"It was quite special because I don't score many with my head," Beckham said.

"God knows (when I scored the last one with my head). I really don't know."
