Hu speaks on advancement of women ( 2003-08-28 09:03) (China Daily)
President Hu Jintao, also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, called on Chinese women to constantly strive for improvement and further achievements in the course of the nation's opening up and reform as well as modernization. Hu made the remarks when talking with the newly elected leaders of the All-China Women's Federation and some of the delegates who attended the Ninth National Women's Congress of China in Beijing. The congress, held August 22 to 26, was attended by more than 1,300 delegates from across the country. The federation, established in 1949, is the largest women's organization in the country, and holds its national congress every five years. The social status of Chinese women will be further promoted along with the progress of socialist construction, Hu said. Hu also expressed the hope that Chinese women will become more self-confident and nurture their self-esteem, while at the same time using their courage to work for the nation's renewal. He said that all levels of the federation should be based upon grassroots work and closely linked with the everyday lives of Chinese women. The Party always attaches great importance to issues concerning women, and will do its best to help women overcome all kinds of difficulties, including unemployment and crimes affecting women and children.
