Careful weighing of death penalty
( 2003-08-27 14:37) (China Daily)

A former airline attendant sentenced to death for killing her lover has won a stay of execution, reports Beijing Evening News.

The judgment was changed as part of a court decision to carefully consider the capital punishment penalty in criminal cases involving disputes within a family or between neighbours.

According to the Municipal Higher People's Court, some 35 convicts previously sentenced to death have been reprieved over the past two years under the "Strike Hard" campaign.

The policy requires that more thought go into every case in which the death penalty might apply. If a sentence of death is deemed questionable in any instance, judges are advised not to use it, said the court.
