Coke offers to settle with Yao Ming ( 2003-08-26 15:07) (Agencies)
Yao Ming is featured on the label of a commemorative Coca Cola bottle with other Chinese players. Coca-Cola has proposed a plan to settle a lawsuit filed by Yao Ming, but the NBA star's lawyer said he is "not satisfied." Yao, who plays for the Houston Rockets, filed a lawsuit against Coke's Chinese unit alleging that the company had improperly used his image on beverage cans. He is seeking a public apology and a symbolic award of one yuan, or about 12 cents. Coke, however, has said it has the right to show groups of at least three members of the Chinese national basketball team under a sponsorship deal. Coke offered a plan to settle the brouhaha, Yao's attorney, Wang Xiaopeng said. But Yao is not happy with the proposal. "The key question is that Coca-Cola should not only appease us, but they should admit fault and let the public know what they have done," Wang said, according to the news service. Kelly Brooks, a spokesman for Coke, said the company is trying to resolve the issue. "All parties are continuing towards an amicable resolution," he said.
