Fire prevention too late to save home ( 2003-08-26 11:48) (China Daily)
An old wooden apartment building on Changning Road was recently devastated by
fire, according to Oriental Morning Post.
Firefighters were able to put out the blaze soon after arriving on the scene,
and all 30 residents, from 11 families, escaped injury.
But the building was badly damaged, and the residents were left homeless.
Luckily, the local residential committee was able to enlist nearby hotels for
help. The families moved into their new, temporary homes within an hour.
Apparently the building was just days away from having fire prevention
devices, such as smoke alarms, installed. If the work had been completed, the
fire wouldn't have caused quite so much damage.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
