400-year-old bridge collapses ( 2003-08-25 11:28) (HK Edition)
The Tai'an Bridge, which was built more than 400 years ago, has collapsed in
the midst of renovation efforts.
According to officials in Zhujiajiao, where the bridge is located, the Tai'an
is the oldest existing single-arch bridge in Shanghai.
Because the original stones used to construct the bridge are still in good
condition, cultural relic experts say they are confident that it can be rebuilt.
The incident is not expected to delay the refurbishment project.
The renovation site has been sealed off since the collapse, according to
Xinmin Evening News.
