The Shahu (Shahu Lake) Tourism Resort, some 56 km north of Yinchuan, borders on the Yellow River to the east and the Helan Mountains to the west. A state-level nature reserve for waterfowl, the area has 895 ha of water, 1,837 ha of marshland, and 1,515 ha of desert with shifting sand dunes.

It is home to 140 varieties of animals and over 100 kinds of birds, numbering over 100,000 in all. Since the establishment of the tourism area in 1989, a wide variety of programs for visitors have been made available, such as visits to the aquatic products exhibition hall, typical south China villages surrounded by water, the Hui folklore garden and overnight stays in yurts on the grassland.
