HK, Macao tours getting 'too hot' ( 2003-08-21 14:07) (China Daily)
With the number of mainland tourists to Hong Kong and Macao expected to surge during the National Day holiday week, Guangdong plans to initiate a "pre-warning system" to help potential tourists make rational decisions, reports Nanfang Daily. More than 80,000 people from Zhongshan, Dongguan, Jiangmen and Foshan have applied to visit Hong Kong and Macao as individuals. Among the 30,000 who have obtained visas so far, only 3,000 have completed their trips, while the remaining 90 per cent are saving their visas for future use. And with residents of Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai also allowed to visit Hong Kong and Macao as individuals from yesterday, the influx would only get bigger. There is every reason to believe that the number of tourists travelling to Hong Kong and Macao will reach exceedingly high levels during the holiday week starting October 1, said industry insiders. The Provincial Tourism Bureau is in talks with police to publicize the number of cross-border travellers via websites or major media outlets. The figures are meant to help people reconsider their plans before swarming into Hong Kong and Macao en masse, said officials.
