Boat causing oil spill in Huangpu River found in Zhejiang
( 2003-08-21 11:47) (Xinhua)

The boat which caused a serious oil spill in the Huangpu River in Shanghai two weeks ago was found Tuesday at a shipyard in Huzhou City of neighboring Zhejiang Province.

Two suspects in the case were detained by the police.

Local police said Wednesday the small boat with a deadweight capacity of 295 tons hit a cargo ship moored near the Wujing Power Plant on the early morning of Aug. 5, damaging the ship's cabin and causing 85 tons of fuel to spill into the river.

Police said the boat's owner Guan Jihua is from Huzhou City. His son, Guan Zejiang, and the helmsman, Chen Songgao, were on the boat that day.

Chen, who was steering the boat, said that he was overtired when the accident happened.

Chen steered his boat away from the scene of the accident, and went to the shipyard in Huzhou for repairs.

The clearing of the river came to an end on Aug. 12, and the Shanghai government estimated the total cost might be 10 million yuan (US$1.2 million).
