Farmers sell urban trees ( 2003-08-20 10:44) (China Daily)
Many farmers from Zhejiang Province have discovered money does grow on trees
- by cutting them down along Shanghai's streets and selling them in their
villages, Shanghai Times reports.
They enter the city at nightfall with tools and borrowed cars to chop down
and transport the fallen trees.
According to the newspaper, more than 50,000 trees have been stolen so far
this year from along the 31-kilometre stretch of greenery at the Pudong Section
of the outer-ring highway, at a loss of 100,000 yuan (US$12,000).
