Heads of deaf theft gang caught ( 2003-08-19 10:55) (China Daily)
The heads of a gang of more than 200 hearing-impaired thieves from all over
the country have been arrested in Fujian Province, reports Haixia Metro News.
In Nanping and Jian'ou, more than 60 key members, including both leaders and
six mid-level members, have been arrested by police.
The gang stole 800,000 yuan (US$96,000) in 2001, 1.3 million yuan
(US$156,000) last year, and 700,000 (US$84,000) during the first five months of
this year.
The gang leaders used the money to travel around the country having fun, and
each had also bought a limousine.
The deaf gang leaders, Lai and Huang, often hired people who could hear and
speak clearly to serve as interpreters and chauffeurs.
