Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region will focus on speeding up its economic development to build a well-off society in the western region, a senior provincial official said in Yinchuan, provincial capital of Northwest China's Ningxia on Saturday.

Ma Wenxue, deputy-secretary of the Party Committee of Ningxia, noted that the region has made great achievements in economic and social development in the past few year.

Agricultural and industrial output have seen marked increase. Service sector, which makes up 38 percent of the region's Gross Domestic Product, also grows quickly.

The GDP of the region reached 39.93 billion yuan (US$4.82 billion) in the first half of the year, a 12.1 per cent increase over the same period last year, according to Ma.

Loca resident are benefiting from the rapid economic growth. Urban residents' per capita disposable income hit 6,100 yuan in the first half of this year, up 59.6 per cent over the same period five years ago.

The farmers are also getting wealthier, with per capita income reaching 1,917 yuan in the January-June period, 24.1 per cent more than five years ago, Ma said.

Ma noted that China's drive for the development of western region offers has offered great opportunities for Ningxia. Ma said that the province have to seize the opportunity to make an economic take-off.

Technological and structural innovations, industrialization, city development, information industry, and deepening reform will be the focus of the region's future developent, said Ma.
