Cosmetic surgery popular with youth ( 2003-08-15 11:12) (China Daily)
About 60 to 70 per cent of the patients undergoing operations at the Cosmetic
Surgery Hospital this summer have been in their teens and 20s, reports Beijing
Morning Post.
The hospital, which operates under the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences,
said most of the patients this July and August have been middle school or
college students bent on improving their appearance to boost their confidence
and give them a competitive edge.
From 1997 to 2001, the number of cosmetic surgery patients under the age of
18 grew five-fold. Eyelid enhancement is the most popular operation, the
hospital said.
But no one should expect to be transformed into a fairy princess through
surgery, an expert warned.
