( 2003-08-14 15:34) (Agencies)

Gu Xiulian, vice-president of the All-China Women's Federation
The Chinese government has 21  women in senior positions, including 14 in the cabinet, Gu Xiulian, vice-president of the All-China Women's Federation, said on  Thursday.

Their success is a sign of the great advances in Chinese women' s rights in political life and social activities in the past five  years, said Gu Xiulian, who is also vice-chairwoman of the  Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

Of the 21 women, seven are leaders of the Communist Party of  China or the State and the others are ministers or vice-ministers  in the cabinet, said Gu.
Party committees and governments at provincial, prefecture and  county level have 5,056 women members.

"The awareness of political participation among women has been  strengthened," she said.

Gu added that 43.95 percent of the total college and university students were female, marking a sharp increase of 2.67 million  over five years ago.
