Fujian charity offers support for orphans ( 2003-08-14 09:10) (China Daily)
A charity project entitled "Saving One Yuan to Support An Orphan," sponsored by the Fujian Charity Head Office, is going to start up across East China's Fujian Province in late August. "Everyone can donate as much as they like, individuals or units, and there is no limit. The goal of the project is to support orphans in Fujian Province," said Zhang Mingjun, Chief of the Fujian Charity Head Office. Established in August, 2002, the Fujian Charity Head Office has implemented many programmes, including the Orphan Support Project, Disabled Help Programme, Education Help Programme and others. Since the beginning of this year, 1,518 orphans have been helped by the office, with each being sponsored with 1,000 yuan (US$120) as financial support per year. The Orphan Support Project has attracted the attention and support of many media, including CCTV News, Shanghai TV, Fujian TV and many local papers. Many individuals have already supported 48 orphans after many special reports in the Strait Metropolis Paper, a popular local news publication. Fujian faces a shortage of charity funds, especially in some poverty-stricken areas. There are more than 8,000 orphans under the age of 14 in Fujian, all suffering through great hardship. Owing to certain age, health and income problems, more than 3,000 orphans
have great difficulty getting by and they need support and care from benefactors
of all kinds.
