One year until Athens ( 2003-08-09 09:37) (www.olympic.org)
August 13 will mark the final countdown to the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad,
which will take place from 13 to 29 August 2004 in Athens. Three
hundred and sixty-six days (one leap year!), before the Opening Ceremony of the
Games, the IOC President, Jacques Rogge, will sign the official invitations to
be sent to the 201 National Olympic Committees in a ceremony held at the IOC
headquarters in Lausanne. Amongst those attending the ceremony will be
Mrs Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, the President of the Athens Organising
Committee (ATHOC), Messrs Nikos Filaretos and Lambis V. Nikolaou, IOC members in
Greece and Mr Denis Oswald, Chairman of the IOC Coordination Commission for the
2004 Games. Under the motto "Olympic Games is all of Greece", ATHOC
and the municipalities of Thessaloniki, Heraklio, Patra, Volos, and Nea Ionia
are organising simultaneous open-air concerts. Popular singers will perform,
joining the residents of these Olympic venues to celebrate this significant and
symbolic day in the lead up to the celebration of this great sports festival.
