Food companies lose in fake contest ( 2003-08-08 13:22) (China Daily) Three men have been accused
of defrauding more than 140 food companies by inviting them to enter a fake
contest, reports Beijing Times.
Wang Xu and two accomplices swindled in excess of 600,000 yuan (US$72,000) by
pretending to run a contest they called the "Gold Prize for Food Favoured by the
Public".
The accused started the scam last September, sending documents to food
manufacturers complete with counterfeit seal imprint of the State Food Quality
Inspection Centre.
The "participants", which included some famous firms, paid 3,000 yuan
(US$360) each to enter the contest.
