40 days of blue skies, fresh air ( 2003-08-07 11:06) (China Daily) Shanghai saw its bluest sky
to date this year on Tuesday, while air quality in the city has equalled that
found at natural scenic areas for more than a month, according to the Shanghai
Environment Centre.
Oriental Morning Post reports that as of June 26, the city's air quality has
been rated "excellent" for 40 consecutive days for the first time in 10 years.
The big change is the result of a three-year municipal environmental
protection plan, in which the city's industrial structure has been subject to
modifications, large-scale areas of greenery have been planted and more clean
energy sources have been put into use.
The newspaper added that the reduced frequency of sandstorms from the
northern part of China had also contributed to the improved air
quality.
