Taiwan's Chen Shui-bian rejects one China
( 2003-08-07 08:11) (chinadaily.com.cn)

The People's Daily, run by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, carried an article on Thursday on the reasons behind the deadlock in relations between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan region.

The mainland has done its utmost to sincerely promote the development of cross-straits relations, but the Taiwan authorities have so far shown no good faith to ease and improve the relations since the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) came into power in March 2000, said the signed article.

The DPP has always rejected the "one-China principle" and obstinately maintains the "independence of Taiwan" position, added the article.

Looking at the development of cross-straits ties over the past three years, it is clear that a series of "Independence of Taiwan" polices pursued by the DPP is the fundamental reason behind the stagnation of the relations across the Taiwan Straits, it noted.

The Taiwan authorities' insistence on independence and rejection of the "one-China principal" seriously destroys the basis for the development of the cross-straits relations, it said.

The policy of progressive independence of Taiwan, pursued by its leader Chen Shui-bian, leads to serious retrogression in areas from politics, economy, foreign relations, science, education and military to social development in Taiwan.

To safeguard the security of Taiwan is an excuse by the Taiwan authorities to block the "Three Direct Links" of trade, mail and transport across the Taiwan Straits, curbing the development of the economy and trade between people on both sides, the article said.

For the past three years, the DPP's open defiance of the "one-China principle" and its all-out separatist activities in the international arena have enhanced the tension in cross-straits relations, the article said.
