  • By 2002, the number of China's registered drug addicts had risen to 1 million, while the proportion of juvenile addicts was above 74 per cent.
  • Heroin-taking accounts for about 87.6 per cent among drug addicts, while the consumption of other drugs is steadily on the rise.
  • In 2002, more than 110,000 cases of narcotics-related crimes involving as many as 90,000 suspects were cracked.
  • In 2002, some 9.29 tons of heroin, 1.21 tons of opium, 3.19 tons of ice (methamphetamine), 1.3 tons of marijuana, 3.01 million tablets of Ecstasy, and 300 tons of addictive chemicals of various kinds were seized by police.
  • On July 2, 2003, 13.2 kilograms of heroin and illicit funds of 120,000 yuan (US$14,450) were seized in Beijing, which makes the city's biggest drug trafficking case since 1949.
