Surviving Shanghai for 12 days ( 2003-08-05 13:56) (China Daily) Thirty college students from
Zhejiang Province have entered the fifth day of their "hardship camp", in which
they are to spend 12 days in Shanghai with just 50 yuan (US$6.00) in cash.
The Shanghai Youth Daily reports that, so far, all of them have found work in
the city, including jobs such as private tutor, waiter and beauty consultant.
Some of them earn 40 yuan (US$4.80) a day.
According to the programme rules, the students cannot get any assistance from
friends or relatives during the 12-day period. The 30 participants were chosen
from among 900 contestants evaluated in tests of their physical health, level of
English and other criteria.
