At least 11 miners killed in East China city
( 2003-07-28 17:36)

Some 11 miners had been confirmed dead in a coal mine flood accident in Zaozhuang, East China's Shandong Province by 11:00 a.m. (Beijing time) Monday.

The accident took place about 10:15 p.m. Saturday, trapping 26 miners working underground. Two miners have been saved while rescue efforts are still under way.

According to an official with the provincial coal mine production safety bureau, the disaster was caused by water in a surface pool leaking into the coal mine.

Most parts of Shandong Province have experienced heavy rainfall lately, increasing the risk of flood accidents in local coal mines.
