Evaluation on the design works for Beijing Central Business District (CBD) core area was finished on Thursday, July 24. The evaluation team examined 11 designs, and graded them into 3 grades.

Zhenying Liang, chief of the evaluation team, announced the result on Thursday afternoon's news conference.

According to Liang, soliciting of design plans began in January, 2003. The collecting and evaluation of planning schemes is organized by the Planning Committee of Beijing and the Administration Committee for the Central Business District of Beijing. Designers around the world submitted their planning schemes. At last, there are 11 works selected to be finally evaluated.

Famous designers home and abroad invited by the organizers examined the 11 works. The final result was published on Thursday. Three design units including SOM (Skidmore Owings & Merrill LPP) and Construction design Institute of Tsinghua University appraised second grade, with the first grade empty.

As the CBD center and a hub of fortune, information and traffic, the CBD core will be constructed as a central part of the overall CBD of Beijing. The CBD core is situated northeast to the intersection between the Chang'an Avenue and the Third Ring East. With a land area of 30 hectares and a planned construction area of over a million square meters, the CBD core area will be dotted with modern business facilities including top international business office buildings, hotels, shopping centers and conference and exhibition centers.

As a visual focus of the CBD and the concentrated display of business functionality, the CBD core is intended to be an international business activity center featuring spatial and landscape integrity, intense business atmosphere, full-fledged auxiliary infrastructure, pleasant environment and 24-hour vitality and vibrancy. The CBD core will also be a core base for concentrated exhibit of the modern service industry and international economic and cultural exchanges in the capital, and will be the first destination for the offices and headquarters of transnational companies.

CBD is a symbol of a modern international cosmopolitan city and a manifestation of the openness and comprehensive power of a country or a region. The trans-century CBD construction endeavor of Beijing is an indication of the rapid economic development of China. CBD will be another international business port in the capital city of Beijing deliberately designed to embrace the opportunity brought by the accession of China to the WTO.
