New York's name in the hat for 2012 Olympics
( 2003-07-16 10:17) (Reuters)

The US Olympic Committee formally nominated New York City as the official US applicant for the 2012 Summer Olympics on Tuesday.

In November, the USOC chose New York as its candidate to stage the 2012 Games after the city put on a presentation that promised triathlon in Central Park and boxing in Madison Square Garden.

But competition will be steep, with London, Madrid, Moscow, Rio de Janeiro, Havana, Istanbul, Leipzig and Paris also in the running.

Tuesday is the deadline for national committees to submit a nomination for the 2012 Games and the successful city will be chosen by the Internaional Olympic Committee (IOC) in July 2005.
