( 2003-07-15 10:43) (xinhua)

The largest flood crest of the Yangtze River this year entered central China's Hubei Province Monday, with flood level in certain spots rising about one meter above the warning level.

The crest is currently in the Jingjiang section of the Yangtze River.

By 8:00 a.m. Monday, the water level at Jianli hydrological station reached 36.40 meters, 0.90 meters above the warning line with the rate of flow at 33,600 cubic meters per second.

At the same time, the water level at Wuhanguan reached 26.73 meters with the rate of flow at 60,000 cubic meters per second.

The flood crest would reach Wuhanguan by July 16, and by then, the water level at Wuhanguan would approach the warning line, flood control officials predicted.

A total of 400,000 people in Hubei have been mobilized to ensure the safety of the Yangtze River embankments.

According to the Hubei Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, the flood crest was caused by heavy rainfall on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.
