Funds urgently allocated to control flood in E. China
( 2003-07-10 17:35) (Xinhua)

The Chinese central government and eastern Anhui Provincial government have allocated urgent funds to help control the worst flood to hit Anhui since 1991.

By late Wednesday, 97.7 million yuan (USD11.8 million) had been appropriated, of the total 78 million yuan (USD9 million) from the central government, said sources with the Anhui provincial government.

Officials with local flood control authorities said that a number of inspection squads had been dispatched to various flood- affected areas in the province, and one of their major tasks was to monitor the use of the funds.

The Huaihe River that runs through Anhui is experiencing the worst flooding since 1991. A number of areas in the province have been flooded as a result of diverting flood water from Huaihe to ease pressure.
