Chinese leaders and visiting Republic of Korea (ROK) President Roh Moo-hyun Tuesday pledged to work more closely to build a comprehensive co-operative partnership.

Wu said the agreement to build a comprehensive co-operative partnership, which was reached by President Hu Jintao and Roh on Monday, accurately reflects the current state of bilateral ties and the orientation of future development.

China and the ROK have maintained good co-operation in bilateral and multilateral areas, witnessing remarkable amounts of trade and investment as well as wide-ranging co-operation, Wu said.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the 10th National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, said the NPC is ready to strengthen exchanges and co-operation with ROK National Assembly.

He said the two sides can learn from each other in the field of legislation.

Premier Wen Jiabao said the two countries have great potential in economic co-operation given the complementary nature of the two economies.

Wen pledged to deepen and expand reciprocal and complementary economic ties with the ROK to promote mutual prosperity.

Wen made suggestions on bilateral co-operation in such areas as high technology, resources exploitation and environmental protection industries.

He also encouraged ROK enterprises to take an active part in the country's development of its vast western areas, dubbed the "Go West'' campaign.

Roh said his country is ready to further develop bilateral ties with China and work for the development and prosperity in the Northeast Asian region.

Vice-President Zeng Qinghong said bilateral relations have developed in a comprehensive manner since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1992.

That has served the practical interests of the people of both countries and contributed to regional peace and stability, Zeng said.

Turning to the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Zeng said China welcomes an improvement in relations on the Peninsula and appreciates the peace and prosperity policy advocated by Roh.

In anther development, Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said yesterday that the formulas of dialogue can vary as long as the "Beijing Talks'' process continue.

Kong said the DPRK nuclear issue should be resolved through peaceful dialogue while the security concerns of the DPRK should also be met.

He said China will continue to push for such a dialogue as it has always been doing.
